LIBERTY DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS (BOYS):
All season, the Liberty District swim and dive competitions boiled down to 4 evenly matched teams (Fairfax, Madison, Thomas Jefferson and Langley) that would battle for the district title. At the district championships, two teams (Madison and Fairfax) would step up with a series of remarkable performances to distance themselves from the other competitors. When the smoke cleared, The Warhawks had edged the Rebels by a slim 11.5 point margin.
The 200 Medley Relay team of seniors Patrick Johnson, Michael Cosgrove, Tommy Scibilia and Peter Rossbach took second place honors with a region qualifying time.
The 200 Yard Freestyle featured one of the more impressive fields you could see in a district event. 12 swimmers posted region qualifying time and all 16 scorers were within a quarter of a second of the cut. The Rebels rose to the task with three scorers junior Austin Patteson (10th), freshman John Kim (14th) and senior Michael Cosgrove (16th). Cosgrove and Patteson both posted personal best times in the effort.
The Rebels picked up their game even more in the 200 IM. Senior Jake Baumgardner took 2nd place with an impressive state qualifying time. Senior Quinn Giroux dropped more than 2 seconds of his previous best time to take 5th place and record a Region qualifying time. Senior Patrick Johnson began his night of stunning performances by dropping nearly 6 seconds off his previous best time and posting a region qualifying time and securing a 7th place finish.
The 50 Freestyle featured the Rebels first District title and the first of a pair of strange events. Senior Joey Kelly took home the title as sprint king with a 1st place and state qualifying performance. Junior Travis Lauri literally met his match in TJ senior Matt Callahan. Travis and Matt tied for second place in the event with impressive state qualifying times. Junior Elliot Meyer also joined the scoring with a 14th place finish. Freshman Paul Robertson posted a personal best time in the event as well.
In the dive event, all 3 of the Rebels divers scored. Seniors Sam Johnson and Peter Rossbach both took podium positions finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Both divers qualified for the regional dive championships. Junior Lane McDermott also scored with an impressive 7th place finish.
In the 100 Butterfly, the Rebels impressively placed 3 swimmers in A finalist (top 8) positions. Junior Austin Patteson moved up the rankings posting a personal best and state qualifying time while finishing in 4th position. Senior Jake Baumgardner posted a region qualifying time and posted a 6th place finish. Senior Tommy Scibilia also stepped up, posting a personal best and regional qualifying time and moving up into A finalist position in a tie for 8th place. Junior Eduardo Perez blew away his personal best time, dropping almost 2 seconds, and finishing in 13th position.
In the 100 Freestyle, Senior Joey Kelly was edged out for the District Championship, but still posted a state qualifying time and finished in 2nd place. Amazingly, junior Travis Lauri again matched his counterpart from TJ as he and Matt Callahan produced identical times for the second time in the meet. This time the two tied for 4th place with regional qualifying times. Junior Elliot Meyer and freshman Paul Robertson both posted personal best times in the event.
Not to be outdone by the Butterfly team, the Rebels 500 Freestyle swimmers also looked to dominate the A final heat. Freshman John Kim (3rd), senior Quinn Giroux (5th) and senior Michael Cosgrove (7th) all scored top positions and all posted regional qualifying times. John Kim and Michael Cosgrove's times also represented personal bests. Senior Orhan Yilmaz also posted a personal best time in the event.
The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Travis Lauri, Austin Patteson, Jake Baumgardner and Joey Kelly set a season best and state qualifying time good enough for a 2nd place finish.
In the 100 Backstroke, senior Patrick Johnson continued his amazing performance by besting his season best time by nearly 3 seconds, finishing in 3rd position in state qualifying time. Senior Tommy Scibilia and junior Eduardo Perez both posted personal best times on their way to scoring in 12th and 15th positions respecitvely. Junior Timmy Milmoe also posted a personal best time in the event.
Peter Rossbach was the lone scorer for the Rebels in the 100 Breaststroke dropping more than 2 seconds off his season best time and finished in 5th positions, qualifying for regionals. Senior Sam Johnson, freshman Ben Click and junior Lane McDermott all posted impressive time drops off their personal best times in the event.
In the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Travis Lauri, Austin Patteson, Jake Baumgardner and Joey Kelly posted a 2nd place finish in a state qualifying time. The swim by these four Rebels is so impressive that it has exceeded the time necessary for All American Consideration.
The Rebels Boys will return to action in the Northern Region Championships on February 12th.
